I’m sure you’ve heard these words before, “What a man, what a man, what a man, what a MIGHTY good man…” or “Ah, Push it… Push it REAL GOOD (baby!)” Well, omit the “baby” part, I just couldn’t help myself! But, these are just a few good hits from the chart topping group Salt-N-Pepa, but if you’re thinking what I’m thinking… what happen to them—besides breaking up—when are they going to make another hit? Or what about, “Don’t you want to be more than friends, Hold me tight and don’t let go, don’t let go…” But, when you’re mad at your lover you want to tell him, “No, you’re never gonna get it, never ever gonna get it, my lovin’…” My girls En Vogue… once again, why aren’t they making music anymore? With these thoughts playing in my head for over a week now, I decided to see what these girls—now women— groups have been up to.
Salt-N-Pepa was one of the first girl groups in the 80’s of hip hop to make strong statements about being a woman. They made it known that they wanted a man who can do “it” right and that they too had what it takes. For example, “Felt it in my hips so I dipped back to my bag of tricks… Lick him like a lollipop should be licked…” Wow! Women and men praised them for their catchy tunes and hip beats for years, but Salt left the group officially in 2002. With much shade thrown towards Salt and rumors—the women needed money maybe—the group rejoined in 2007. They’ve been performing all over the world with their songs from past albums. The group has been having much success and landing performances with fellow throwback peers such as: LL Cool J, MC Lyte, En Vogue, SWV to just name a few. Now they’re on tour and their fans are still crazy about the trio.
Unlike Salt-N-Pepa, En Vogue never really got back together with the original four members once they broke it off and got back together again. It’s sad that En Vogue couldn’t get contract agreements together and remove jealousy out of their personal relationships and just focused on making music. Over a course of 17 years, they’ve had group members join and quit. The only two consistent and original members who never quit the group are, Terry Ellis and Cindy Herron. Even with the interchangeable group members, they’re still performing along the east coast to sold out shows nowadays. But, nothing beats the original sounds from the quad, they produced great songs together. A few of my personal favorites from the group consist of: “Don’t Let Go” and “Free Your Mind.”
Well there you have it… Salt-N-Pepa & En Vogue, nothing beats the original tunes of good music. Because when the music is made of good quality, lyrics, and vocals, people will remember where it all started. Then it will get stuck in your head for weeks…
