Look at the calendar…go ahead, look at it. February is coming to an end and in just a few short weeks it will be spring again.
“OH MY GOD!!!!” That is the typical response to that little exercise. That’s because most of us have not done the things that we promised ourselves that we would have accomplished by now. Don’t fret, it is certainly not to late to get ready for the pending summer months.
There are about 90 days or so until June 1. That means that each of us has at least 90 days to get ready to hit the beach close to the way we want to ( healthier). Now this does not mean that you have to go to the gym for 2 hours today, tomorrow and the rest of the week, actually just the opposite. Because if we do that (like most did that first week in January) we will burn ourselves out in a few short weeks. The smart thing to do is start small; drink an extra 2 glasses of water 20 minutes prior to meals every day. And change one extra habit to increase your metabolism. It can be as simple as parking further away from the building at work so that you have to walk a little more or taking the stairs instead of the elevator (even half way).
After 15 or 20 days of changing these little actions you will find a subtle but noticeable change in energy levels and overall feel. As we feel a little bit better we should begin to implement some actions that are a little more exercise specific, like a 30 minute walk on the treadmill. Increase the intensity of the actions/exercises weekly. Eventually you will find that you have began a regular exercise regimen.
The final piece of the puzzle in order to get yourself back into the shape that you desire is simply to be consistent. Do what has gotten you into better shape as often as you can. One exercise that will really get you going is the squat with a weighted ball into a toss of that same ball as you rise from a squatting position. It is commonly known as “wall ball”.
