Got Parabens? The information you NEED to know about your beauty products.
Parabens are chemical preservatives used to prevent microbial growth and extend shelf life in beauty/health products. Parabens are found in shampoos, conditioners, lotions, deodorants, facial/ shower scrubs and cosmetics. As a society, we need to be more aware of what we ingest or put in/on our bodies. We know that preservatives are toxic to our bodies.
Parabens can be absorbed through the skin, blood and digestive system. Parabens have been identified as estrogenic and disruptive to normal endocrine function. Estrogenic chemicals mimic the function of the naturally occurring hormone estrogen. Exposure to external estrogens has been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer and reproductive toxicity. Paraben laced products also cause extreme allergic and skin reactions.
Protect yourself. Read labels.
An informed consumer, is a powerful consumer. Read labels and ingredients of products you use. Look for these commonly used parabens: ETHYLPARABEN, BUTYLPARABEN, METHYLPARABEN, PROPYLPARABEN, ISOPARABEN. Avoid products with these ingredients.
How can you avoid these products?
Look for products labeled “Paraben Free”. Make sure to read all the labels and ingredients. Many natural and organic companies have found effective, SAFE alternatives to parabens. Many current product lines carry PARABEN FREE products as well-here are a few examples-Burt’s Bees Wax, Tarte, Boscia, Stila, Cover FX , Arbonne, Murad, Urban Decay – to name a few. And Sephora has over 100 PARABEN FREE products.
